Note: I’m a mess. I’m still not sure what drove me to start reading but once I got started, I couldn’t put the first book down. Once finished, I started instantly with the next one and it took me less than 48 hours. In these hours I got my old self back, you know, the reader who only stops to eat, shower, watch a couple of hours of telly, do what else needs to be done, and then back to my books.
These are my first dystopian books, yes, I’m patting myself for having gone, enjoyed, and finished them. For as long as I can remember, I’ve never enjoyed reading and/or watching anything gory. Political. I think the fact that these are categorised under the young adult genre initially lulled me into thinking, yes, these books are safe.
Suzanne Collins had me nicely intrigued and hooked from the start of the Reaping. All of the characters are likable and relatable, yes, even Snow. Then I suppose shite got real to me with the scene at the meadow. I bawled at the Meadow’s Song (that’s what I call it in my mind, until I found out it’s actually called “Rue’s Lullaby”). I spoiled myself prior to reading, but it was a shock still. And then I remembered to put my GRRM-shield up, only a little too late.
I enjoyed these books. I laughed, I cried, I swore, I raged — I’m a mess. I feel like myself, like, really myself. The reader who is not feeling strangely detached. These books are keepers to me, the kind that stays with me even long after I’m done with them. So yes, I’ll definitely buy hard copies now and include those in/on my little floor library.
I was wrong thinking I can finish The Book Thief in a week.
